AUGUST VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

Jean Rhyne Memorial

July/August 2020

Jean Rhyne's estate graciously donated her ikebana containers to our chapter and many of them were purchased by chapter members. The August event for our chapter is a memorial virtual exhibition using her containers. Chapter members are invited to make an arrangement using her containers or alternatively, an arrangement in any container in her memory. A virtual gallery of arrangements is viewable in this website under the Galleries tab.

NOTE: If you click on the above photo, it will open a link and take you to the Galleries tab.

Scroll down to Jean Rhyne Memorial exhibition photo slideshow. Clicking in the middle of the picture will open the slideshow full-size so the entire arrangement is viewable on your display.

SEPTEMBER VIRTUAL MEETING

Website Introduction and Koryu School Demonstrion

September 16, 2020

10 AM to 12 Noon

VIRTUAL MEETING and WORKSHOP VIA ZOOM

Access details will be posted in Member's Only and has been sent to members via eMail. Please contact John Spence for assistance in setting up a virtual Zoom meeting.

John Spence will be conducting a virtual tour of the chapter website particularly oriented towards new members but also for experienced members to begin using the virtual resources in the website. If you didn't know that we have an entire Tutorial tab in the website that's constantly being added to, then this virtual tour is ideal for you. The newest features of the website will be highlighted.

Since no meeting would be complete without some ikebana, I will have a display of an arrangement in the Koryu school and will conduct a workshop and demonstration of a classic Koryu arrangement. In the past when there was any discussion of the biggest schools of ikebana, there were usually four schools listed. In the present day though, schools are limited to Sogetsu, Ohara and Ikenobo. The fourth school was always Koryu. The demonstration arrangement is very unique in a style limited to the Koryu school.

DECEMBER POTLUCK LUNCHEON
Christmas Ikebana Workshop

December 15, 2021
11:00 to 3:00 or later
Potluck and workshop hosted by John and Lucy Spence
This December's meeting will be hosted by John and Lucy Spence at their home in Columbia. There is ample on-street parking and it is recommended to park on the street by the mailbox. The address and specific directions are posted in Members Only. John and Lucy will be preparing several Japanese menu items (meat gyoza/potstickers and vegetarian curry) and attendees are free to bring whatever potluck dish they wish. Japanese cuisine is not necessary. John will present a brief demonstration of Christmas oriented ikebana arrangements using Holly and Nandina from the yard. There are ample amounts of both Holly and Nandina on the property so attendees can make their own arrangement or take the line material home. Bring your favorite vase, kenzan and flowers. Line material will be provided. The house is located on 5 acres of forest but the terrain is uneven. However, feel free to wear a good pair of boots and defoliate whatever line material you can reach. A headcount of attendees is necessary to adjust the food preparation. Please notify John or Lucy that you will be able to attend.
John's Christmas arrangement demonstration will be available on Zoom. Details will be posted in Members Only

As much as this is a disappointment for our members, our event attendees and the CMA, we arenot comfortable with idea of exposing our members to the public amid this increased incidence of the virus.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION & TEA

March Virtual Exhibition

Presenter: Hideko Rainey

This year's exhibition theme is "Baskets" and features over 50 ikebana arrangements by Columbia Ikebana International members. A wide variety of schools and styles will be on display and will also feature traditional and the most recent style of Zen miniature gardens.

This year's presenter will be Hideko Rainey of Ikebana International Chapter 81 in Augusta GA.  Hideko received her instructor certificate in Sogetsu in 1953 under the school's founder. Currently she is a first rank instructor, Riji, and has twice received the Sogetsu Lifetime Honor Award. She will be demonstrating arrangements in the Sogetsu school. Hideko has been an advisor to our chapter for many years and has generously shared her time and expertise, providing demonstrations, lessons and a connection with Japan. We are honored to have her as our presenter this year. She will be using her extensive basket collection (old and new!) for demonstration.

This year's exhibition is planned to be virtual and consequently arrangements will be added to the exhibition gallery beginning in February and run throughout the month of March.

COLUMBIA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

April 2021

Ikebana International Chapter 182 is privileged to annually have a booth in the Cantey Building. We may not be a country but we're always next to Japan. Several dozen arrangements will be on display and the public is invited to stop by and have a free lesson in ikebana.  However, at the present time, there are concerns about scheduling in 2021. The Columbia International Festival has not yet committed to a normal opening due to Covid 19. The Columbia International Festival and Chapter 182 will make an informed decision about whether or not to hold the festival as scheduled based on what’s best for the health and safety of our community. Please check https://www.cifonline.org/ and here for updates.
