AUGUST POTLUCK LUNCHEON
and
Japanese Garden (work in progress)
John & Lucy's House

August 16, 2023 at 11 AM

This year's inaugural meeting will be a potluck luncheon at John and Lucy's home. The property is named Stone Garden and John and Lucy  have both been hard at work building the beginnings of a Japanese Garden. Everyone is welcome to walk around the property and cut whatever line material they want (except for my Japanese maples!!!) If you want to bring a swimsuit and hop in the pool afterwards, feel free. The pool is in a screenhouse so it's bug-free. Lunch will be once everyone arrives and settles in, probably about 11:30. There is abundant on-street parking. Park on the forest side of the street and you can either walk down the driveway  to see my new Japanese gate or park by the mailbox to see the bridge and waterfall.

OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION and WORKSHOP
Pam Kolb, Ikenebo

October 18, 2023
Coffee/Set up: 9:30-10:00
Business Meeting: 10:00-10:15
Workshop and Program: 10:15-12:00
Clean Up: 12:00 - 12:15

IN-PERSON MEETING and DEMONSTRATION/WORKSHOP
Garden Club Council Building

Pam is a long time member of Chapter 81 in Augusta and Ikenobo instructor. She will be demonstrating an Ikenobo style called shoka shimputai. Rikka was the original style of Ikenobo. It is an extremely formal style and shoka grew out of that. While rikka seeks beauty in the harmony among plants, shoka focuses on the shussho (inner beauty of a plant) that suggests a plant’s life. Shussho is the unique character of each plant, beauty discovered in the various growing forms of a plant as it makes every effort to live. Based on this inner beauty, the life of plants is elegantly and gracefully expressed arranged in a single vase.
In shoka there are two styles: shoka shofutai with traditional form, and shoka shimputai with no set form.

NOVEMBER
SOGETSU MEETING and WORKSHOP
Special demonstration with a surprise!

Hosted by Hideko Rainey, Riji

November 15, 2023
Coffee/Set up: 9:30-10:00
Business Meeting: 10:00-10:15
Program 10:15-11:00
Workshop: 11:15-12:00
Clean Up: 12:00 - 12:15
 IN-PERSON meeting at the GCCB

Hideko promises to have a surprise special aspect of her demonstration for chapter 182 members.

Hideko will be demonstrating Sogetsu arrangements with a special surprise for chapter 182 members.

Workshop

Hideko always has a workshop following her demo. This is an ideal opportunity to get invaluable feedback for your arrangements. Plan to make a typical design you normally make that might need a little tweaking.

She has a surprise planned for the group for this particular demonstration.

Container wise, most of what she's making will be in nagieri (upright) containers that are fairly large but she will be demonstrating a range of materials very loosely revolving around autumn. One of her arrangements will be in a very large suiban, a rectangular version of a moribana.

Unfortunately, it seems her Japanese maples have already dropped leaves so she doesn't have that available to share with us. Her workshop is flexible. Bring whatever material you have available for an autumn arrangement. For example, branches with leaf color change, dry (wilted or leafless) branches, or leaves/stems with other autumn drying/wilting etcetera would be ideal. Suggested flowers are anything showing typical autumn colors.

FEBRUARY EXHIBITION PREPARATION WORKSHOP
The Celebration Arrangement

Lucy Spence, Sogetsu

February 21, 2024

Coffee/Set up: 9:30-10:00

Business Meeting: 10:00-10:15
Workshop: 10:15-12:00
Clean Up: 12:00 - 12:15

Note: Every member is encouraged to make an arrangement for the exhibition. It is enormously beneficial to your growth as an ikebana practitioner to exhibit. This workshop is specifically intended to assist all members to make an arrangement for our annual exhibition but even so, is an excellent opportunity to get a great deal of one-on-one assistance and feedback. Exhibitions push you to do your best work and that is how all of us grow in our capabilities as practitioners.

Our chapter is celebrating it's 50th anniversary. This wonderful milestone is cause for celebration! In Japan, celebrations warrant certain specific aspects of ikebana arrangements to clearly demonstrate the celebratory cause. Lucy will be demonstrating her favorite exhibition arrangements and techniques with specific variations for celebration arrangements. She also will offer insights to member's workshop arrangements.  Bring your favorite container, kenzan, line material and flowers to practice making your best work. Whether you exhibit or not, this workshop is invaluable to develop your skills as an ikebana practitioner.
